Sustainable Development Moves Praised
The Badenoch and Strathspey Conservation Group has welcomed the message in a landmark policy speech by Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell that sustainable development and environmental protection are the responsibility of every one of us. The group has also praised the establishment of the Sustainable Development Forum to bring together all stakeholders to work out action for the environment in Scotland.
After meeting the First Minister in Perth recently Group Convenor Dr Gus Jones said, " We welcome the First Minister's commitment to ensuring the new Sustainable Development Forum receives the information and support it needs and deserves to deliver in a meaningful way. We believe there is strong support for the commitment of the Labour party in Scotland to champion environmental justice, which is an issue in the rural Highlands just as it is in cities blighted by industrial development."
On the world stage the Group has also welcomed Jack McConnell intention to attend the Johannesburg summit along with other world leaders determined to make sustainable development a global reality.
Closer to home the group also welcomes moves by David Stewart MP to push the case for World Heritage Site Status for the Cairngorms with Labour party colleagues in Westminster.
In Inverness on 16th March at a conference of the Highland Environmental Network on local action for wise use of resources members of the group hope to talk to Green MSP Robin Harper and Councillor Ross, Chairman of Highland Council's Select Committee on Sustainable Development.
Referring to the Inverness conference the spokesperson for the Badenoch and Strathspey Conservation Group said "the Highland Environmental Network, who are holding this conference with support from SNH and the Council, provides a focus for sharing and distributing information and expertise in environmental matters in the Highlands. Delegates will be interested to hear from Robin Harper MSP and others about how we can help Scotland prepare for the Johannesburg Conference.
